Description
The lump of fear stuck to the back of her throat, but she swallowed down the scream threatening to escape her lungs. How could this have happened? She had felt safe in those waters. Ever since she was young, her parents had told her that you can only find monsters out in the deep sea. Never before had she encountered anyone filled with so much malice, especially since she kept to the shores and shallower waters. Even before the other Tibumeru had attacked, or even spoken, she could smell the pure hate he carried with him.
Though she was frightened, she refused to let herself cry. However, nothing she did could keep her hands and knees from trembling. Enough time had lapsed that the threat of danger had long past but her fingers still remained wrapped tightly over her mouth. As soon as she became conscious she was still doing so, she dropped her hands to her lap and scanned the dark cave she had wandered into. It was cold, the sunlight unable to reach the water at such a depth. A path led down deeper, but even with her eyes adjusted to the low lighting she couldn’t see where it led. The entrance of the cave, where she still had light to see by but enough shadows to hide in, was the safest place to stay for now. This was unfamiliar territory and she had to take any precautions possible. She had already been in enough trouble today.
The girl’s only chance of escape from the aggressive Tibumeru had been to swim away from land and into the deeper water where there was coral and seaweed to hide her trail. She never would have stood a chance stumbling around in the sand. Even as quick as she was in the water, it was pure luck that she had got away unharmed. If she hadn’t found the cave when she did… She didn’t want to think about what would have happened. With a shake of her head, she pushed all the “what ifs” from her mind. Looking back wouldn’t do her any good now. What was important was what she would do next. It took some effort with her shaking limbs, but she pulled herself to her feet, her eyes confirming she was determined to best this challenge. She had escaped her attacker, but she hadn’t yet made it to safety. No, she couldn’t allow herself to break down or back down until she escaped these tainted waters.
